Chapter 1
Surprise!
Paddy meets Dear Me in front of Holy Angels. She’s sticking her tongue out at Mother Superior.
Mary drives home, view of the magic mountains and the burnt foothills
“What the Hell are you doing here!” Pope works on airplanes, Paddy hears Dear me and Padrinho for the first time. He’s going to babysit his grandmother.
Chapter 2
Care & Feeding
Paddy prepares fried mush for Dear Me. Description of the chicken coop. Churn butter. “Why’d you burn down your shack?”
Chapter 3
Death of a Padrinho
Amelia burns down the shack
Other Anselmo fetches her and Josef’s body
Chapter 4
Ah Zezooosh
Pop didn’t come home.
Why she’s called “Dear Me”
What’s a Pedrinho.
Chapter 5
David Watson and the Bullies
Water the olive trees so Pop does embarrass Mom Sunday morning.
David runs up behind Paddy,”Why were they trowing dirt clods at you” He gets a whipping every night to keep the devil out of his dreams.
Waters the fruit trees. What’s so important about pomegranate trees?
Bullies attack again. Dear Me and David run them off.
What’s a whore? Dear Me wasn’t always old.
Chapter 6
Dear Me’s Dying
Dear Me collapses after the Bullies’ attack.
Dr. Pearson & Father Anselmo show up, agree they should go find Henry.
Chapter 7
Rio Vista Hotel
It’s a dump, with a child molester for a room clerk
Sulfur candles, slippery spot on the stairs, escapes the room
Find out Henry’s at Jibboom Street. Telss his mother he doesn’t want to come her any more
Chapter 8
Jibboom Street
Paddy sees same families as last year
Henry protects Paddy from Preacher Watson
Bulls bust up the camp and take Paddy and Henry to safety.
Dear Me has a miracle recovery
Chapter 9
Packers Mass
Dear Me walks towards town to go to the Packer’s Mass, which Father Anselm officiates.
She causes a near-riot amongst the Viuvas
Chapter 10
Pop Leaves
Pop comes home next morning to do milking. He tells Paddy he is going to stay away for a few days so Mom can work our problems he has with Dear Me.
Mary & Dale fuss, sort of. She doesn’t know when he’ll come home.
In Their Prime – 1902
Chapter 11
Raising Capital
Josef’s project falls flat with the money men and his fund raising efforts seemed doomed.
He meets the Viscount Santiago do Lusitano at the Faro Club, a palatial gaming room. Santiago plays faro and welcomes The Padrinho of Sacramento.
It is too noisy to discuss financial matters and they go to the Chinese Pavilion. Josef starts to tell the Viscount his needs, but is cut off. His little group knows all about Josef’s devious ways and they will support him, but it will take finesse
Chapter 12
Royal Equestrian Academy
The group drills were nice but had little excitement for Josef, an excellent rider
Viscount Santiago was an outstanding horsemen, aggressive, but also with a light touch
Chapter 13
Gala
The Gala takes place at the Queluz Palace, adjacent to the Royal Equestrian Academy
The King jokingly appears to support Josef’s quest for capital. The Leagues twists it into an endorsement.
Santiago tells Josef of his wedding to Amelia
Chapter 14
League of Former Gentlemen
Santiago explains that Josef’s fast growth and criminal acts caused his being selected as their California rep.
If he refuses to accept their offer, his life in California will be as a villa in a penny dreadful, which will lead to hanging.
Chapter 15
Wedding Night
Josef arrives at the honeymoon villa and finds his side of the contract with the Viscount is to impregnate Amelia with at least two children over a three-year period.
This solidifies Santiago’s financial future and allows Amelia’s family to become part of the royal family, on the maternal side.
Blackmail is the glue that holds the League together.
Josef agrees enthusiastically to the deal and strides off to find Amelia.
Chapter 16
Assault
Amelia beautifies herself for Santiago. Josef enters and Santiago listens to her anguish in an adjoining room as she is assaulted. He accepts that Josef will fulfill the contract with enthusiasm.
Santiago is left with the guilt that he is not a complete man. His mantra: “May I live in the memories of my triumphs, and change the endings of my failures.
Chapter 17
New Bride
Amelia’s sister Monica is banging in the front door. Too late for advice on sex. Or is she just nosy?counting
Josef chose the dress she should wear today. The right choice. The welts on her back didn’t show.
He leaves for America the next day and Amelia wonders why she suddenly feels lonely.
Chapter 18
The Contract
Explanation of the steps in the deal with the League allowing him to get individual draw-downs, not a lump sum as he had hoped.
War – 1941
Chapter 19
New House
This is mid summer 1941. The new is ready to move into. It only took six weeks to finish and Paddy doesn’t know where the money came from but hopes to find out with his secret communications system.
Pop has been sleeping in the barracks at the airfield every night. Paddy hopes he comes home to stay.
Chapter 20
Babysitting and the stroy of Dear Me’s wedding
This is mid summer. Paddy sasses his mother because he can’t go to play school had has to babysit Dear Me. But his Mom thinks she’s babysitting him. Mary says they have to look out for each other because there are bad men on the roads.
Dear Me tells the story of her wedding. Paddy thinks its all a fairy tale about Kings and Princes and shiny black horses.
Mom tells Paddy it’s all true.
Chapter 21
Mr. Mason, crop duster, is a neighbor, stops by to drink beer with Pop in the grape arbor, which is under Paddy’d tree house, where he spies on adults.
Pop and Mr. Mason were stationed were in the Air Corp together. Pop was court marshaled for punching him because he dove at the Alcatraz Prison smokestack.
They drink beer in grape arbor, Paddy overhears story that Jay is going to enlist in the Canadian Air Force because he can’t make enough money dusting
Pop says why not join Chenault or Navy AF
Chapter 22
The Dwarf
We meet Sister Rosalia, the Dwarf
Back to school. Bernadette trips Paddy with a soccer sweep and the kids a make fun of him with a chant. This would be so bad, but Paddy is really bad at rhyming, so he can’t strike back
Paddy has a sneezing fit and gets blood on his shirt. The Dwarf sends him to the boys room to clean himself up. More dumb chanting
That evening he tells David about The Dwarf, and the punishments at Holy Angels, the worst being having to spend a night with the “orphans.”
Chapter 23
Pearl Harbor
When they come home from mass, Pop wasn’t out front worry the olive trees and waving at the Faithful
We found him listening to the news reports about the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Jay Mason accepted for carrier training
Dear Me feeling better and it’s safe to leave her alone in in the cottage.
Chapter 24
Patent Leather and the The Great Mystery
Girl wears a Christmas present- Mary Janes. Dwarf says they act like a mirror
Boys investigate and think patent leather can show them the Great Mystery
Nuns swing their cords before the investigation is complete. Guido says Paddy made the whole thing up and takes he’s marble. They fight and Paddy gets three “good ones.” He soils himself and Mom has to pick him up early.
Paddy asked David if public school kids are mean. “Sure, all kids are mean.”
Paddy finds out the “The Papists” lent Pop the money to build the house faster so he takes over supporting Dear Me..
Coming to America – 1887
Chapter 25
Francesco Antonio Anselmo Immigrates – 1887
Frank Anselmo Sr was a member of the liberal left party of Garibaldi, had to flee Italy with the aid of a ‘rich Uncle in America’
Frank became family breadwinner at age fifteen – father, mother and two siblings died in a smallpox epidemic.
Frank Jr is big and strong and blond and blue-eyed and the pubescent girls love him. Boys hate him for it. He hates fighting and learns how to avoid it.
Supply and demand finally gets Frank into a seminary. Portuguese men hate priest; Portuguese communities in CA MA need Portuguese priests
Frank is assigned to St. Mary the Blessed. The Abbott dreads another failure at the hands of a “magical patron who considers himself a higher being
Chapter 26
Josef Carvalho Immigrates – 1887
Press gang is at the family market in Horta, Faial. Josef stowaway on the weekly packet bound for Boston.
He’s discovered and the captain threatens to turn him over to Customs if he doesn’t sign on for a voyage to San Francisco, where he jumps ship.
He works in shops in San Leandro the goes to Sacramento to learn how to farm He gets the idea of growing rice and convinces other farmers to go in with him.
It proves to be a failure but they sell out to Anglos swindling them and becoming heroes to their countrymen.
Josef returns from Lisbon and looks at the failed rice farm from the train, looking forward to more successes against the Anglos, now that is back by the League of Former Gentlemen
